A Tyre industry veteran with over 25 years of experience, Rajesh has been instrumental in driving the company's growth and expansion across key markets. Throughout his career, he has held various leadership roles in sales and marketing, consistently delivering strategic initiatives that have strengthened Apollo's market position. His contributions to the industry have been recognized with his appointment as ATMA Marketing Convenor on three occasions. As a Tyre Technologist for 25 years, Unnikrishnan P K is passionate about creating new ways of Tyre characterization methods. He has been pivotal in establishing the ‘state-of-the-art’ Tyre Test Laboratory and Re-tread Research and Training Centre at Apollo Tyres Global R&D—Asia. His 10-year tenure in various rubber and allied industries functions has given him broader business acumen. As an ardent tyre industry professional, Unnikrishnan P K supports environmental sustainability and sustainable development. He has been the convener of the ‘Re-tread SubCommittee’ at the ‘Indian Tyre Technical Advisory Committee’ (ITTAC), bringing severe focus to re-treading, a green recycling process. He is also an ‘Expert Group Member’ of ITTAC on Tyre certification &

labelling tests. Unnikrishnan P K has been a regular speaker in Tyre technology forums, has a few patents, and has published in the Rubber Science journal..

Mr. Matthias Leppert
Chief Operating Officer, Marangoni Group

Matthias Leppert is the Chief Operating Officer of the Marangoni Group, a global integrated player in tyre retreading and has been with the Group for 28 years. An electronics engineer by education from FernUniversitat at Hagen, Germany and a Diploma in Economics and fluent in German, English, Italia and Portuguese, Matthias Leppert travels the globe leading the Group as it continues to grow its footprint on all continents. When he is not on the road travelling, he operates out of Germany and Italy.

Retreading, however, is not how Matthias started his career; he worked for the German Air Force for 11 years from 1979-1990 and his last held position was a ‘Captain’. After a stint at Phoenix AG at Hamburg, Matthias joined Group Marangoni as Director of Manufacturing at Marangoni Retreading Systems Deutschland in 1996 and later took over as the CEO and Managing Director, a position he continues to hold today. Currently he also serves as the President of the Board of Leader Rubber Company South Africa (a 100% subsidiary of Marangoni Group), President of the Board of Gummiservice Produksjon AS, President of the Council of Pneusmarket and Member of the Council at Fedi Gomme.

For increasing the success of the Marangoni Group in the yre retreading sectors as well as in OTR sector, Matthias Leppert won the Best Company Director Award at the Global Recircle Awards 2024.

Mr. Rajiv Mathur
Head, Indag Consultancy Programmes

Mr. Rajiv Mathur, with over 44 years of experience in the tyre industry, is a seasoned professional. His journey from a technical trainee at Goodyear Tyres to a Senior Deputy General Manager at Indag Rubber Ltd. is a testimonial of his tyre development, design, and evaluation expertise. In 1990, he joined Apollo Tyres as Assistant Manager – Technical Service, overseeing field testing and training. In 2001, he joined Indag Rubber Ltd. in a middle management position and gradually rose to Senior Deputy General Manager. He has vast experience in the flat tread process of tyre retreading, product

design and development, field evaluation, troubleshooting and quality assurance. At present, Mr Mathur heads the Indag Consultancy Service Program, advising retreaters on various aspects of the retreading process, equipment selection, project implementation, and training of plant people and customers. He is considered an expert in this field

Dr. Sarat Ghosh
Vice President of R&D at Himadri Speciality Chemical Ltd, CTO Birla Tyres Ltd.

Dr. Ghosh has over 30 years of industrial experience and has worked in several reputed Tyre industries including JK Tyres, Apollo Tyres, Birla Tyres etc. He is Vice President of R&D at Himadri Speciality Chemical Ltd and also working as Chief Technology Officer of the recently taken over (jointly with DBRL) Birla Tyres Ltd. He has vast experience in Tyre Technology, which

includes setting up the R&D Centre, Material and Compound research, Tyre Design and AMP simulation, Process Technology, and New Product Development— truck Bus Radial and Passenger Car Radial Tyres and Bias and offhighway Tyres. Dr. Ghosh's research interests include nanotechnology, New Materials, and Tire Simulation. He has over 12 technical publications, including 3 international refereed journal papers, and over 20 citations since 1993. He was a member of CenTiRe

Ahamed Sherief is one of the sought-after leaders in quality management and business excellence systems, with over 25 years of experience in different rubber and non-rubber industries. He has worked in Moex India Ltd, NCR Corporation, CUMI (Murugappa

Group) TE connectivity, and Apollo Tyres Ltd. He has expertise in Quality Management Systems such as ISO9001, TS16949, six sigma and lean manufacturing. He is an expert in TQM and is responsible for implementing such a system in different companies. He was one of the important members of the team who was responsible for achieving Deming Award for Apollo Tyres Ltd. His knowledge in all areas of quality systems and management in the rubber industry is excellent.

Faculty Profile

Dr. James F. Cuttino

Dr. Cuttino is the Director of Advanced Engineering and Testing at Yokohama Corporation of North America. In this capacity, he oversees the development of advanced capabilities, tools, and testing techniques to support tire development. Before joining Yokohama, Dr. Cuttino was the Director of Tire Technologies and Product Line at LINK Engineering. There, he was responsible for conceptualizing and developing new tire testing equipment and handling business development related to tires and tire testing services.

Dr. Cuttino's academic journey is a testament to his dedication and expertise. He earned his BS and MS degrees from Clemson University

in 1985 and 1987, respectively, and began his career at Michelin America Research and Development Center. His pursuit of a Ph.D. in Precision Engineering at NC State University further solidified his knowledge. Over the next 14 years, he shared his wealth of knowledge by teaching Mechanical Engineering at The University of Alabama and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he founded the North Carolina Motorsports and Automotive Research Center. In 2009, Dr. Cuttino's commitment to excellence led him to start Camber Ridge, LLC, a state-of-the-art facility designed to enhance accuracy and fidelity in tire testing. His academic background and practical experience make him a trusted authority in the field.

Dr. Cuttino has been an active contributor to numerous professional organizations, a testament to his industry recognition, he served as the Secretary and Vice President of the Tire Society, chaired the SAE Truck and Bus Tire Committee, and participated in various SAE committees and the Clemson Tire Conference committee. He delivered the keynote address at the 2017 American Society for Precision Engineering Annual Meeting and received an SAE Best Paper Award at the 2013 SAE Commercial Vehicle Conference. Dr. Cuttino holds nine patents.

  • Dr. Cuttino will provide information on the mechanics of the tyre. This topic includes a physical understanding of various tire performance measures, including rolling resistance, cornering mechanics, pneumatic trail, relaxation length, cornering forces, aligning movement, cornering, braking mechanics, the friction circle, ply steer, conicity, and footprint analysis.
  • Dr. Cuttino will then apply his understanding of the tire parameters to understand the resulting vehicle performance. In this session, he will provide an overview of vehicle dynamics, including weight transfer, understeer gradient, cornering performance, and tools for the tyre engineer to modify the tyre to optimize vehicle performance.
  • Finally, Dr. Cuttino will discuss tire testing and its importance in tire development. Topics will include dimensional analyses, tire stiffness, and measurement of tire properties such as rolling resistance, tire wear, durability, force and movement, noise, and cleat testing.

Faculty Profile

Dr. Annette Lechtenböhmer

Dr. Lechtenböhmer is a citizen of Germany and finished her studies of chemistry at Westfälische Wilhelms- University Münster, Germany, with a PhD in Physical Chemistry in 1981. After two post-doctorates, she was employed at the Goodyear Innovation Center in Luxemburg till recently. During her career, she filled positions within compounding and compound testing, achieving the position of Senior Research Associate. During her 35 years of experience in the rubber industry, she accumulated profound knowledge of compound development, compound testing and test principles, viscoelasticity, compound processing,

testing for material modeling and structure of tires, quality control, and production. Her positions required close cooperation with other steps of tire development, production, tire design, construction, raw material suppliers, and scientific institutes and Universities. She holds several Patents and Trade Secrets

In addition to her industry experience, she was a lecturer at the University, Hannover on “Tire Technology” for many years; she lectured on “Elastomer Technology at Luxemburg University” and participated as a member of the Transport Advisory Board for Framework 7, a program of the European Commission. She is a member of the Tire Society, German Chemical Society, and German Rubber Society. She retired from Goodyear in 2020 but maintained her dedication to promoting rubber and tire science. She continues teaching and serving as an Associate Editor and Secretary of the Tire Science and Technology Journal. In June 2022, she received the Badge of Honor from the German Rubber Society for her special research, technology, and economic performances.

  • Dr. Lechtenböhmer will provide an overview of the different materials used in tyre construction, elaborating on the relationships of compounds and various tire properties including traction, rolling resistance and wear. She will describe the role of polymers, fillers, additives, and rubber chemicals and their influence on compound performance properties. She will then tie this back into an understanding of how the various rubber compounds used in the different tyre components influence the performance properties of tyres.
  • In addition to these topics, Dr. Lechtenböhmer will discuss the impact of compounding on the “Magic Triangle”, the origin and use of the WLF equation, viscoelastic properties, and compound fracture mechanics. Finally, she will wrap up her session with a discussion of environmental aspects of raw materials and compounds.

The program is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of tire technology and help the participants gain adequate knowledge to deal with day-to-day problems and build the capability to resolve such issues. The speakers will cover the following subjects during the course of teaching:
